Urgent Needs for High School Teaching Work

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the demand for high school teachers is expected to increase by 700 million between 2010 and 2020. This means close to 72,000 new high school teaching positions. It also reported that many schools were unable to find teachers for specific subject areas and that the employment prospects of teachers with certificates or education in those areas would be better. The following are some of the most popular subject areas:

The fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are collectively called STEM. In order to maintain international competitiveness, ensure national defense and participate in technological innovation, the United States needs world-class STEM labor force. However, due to the lack of qualified workers, there are currently nearly 3.7 million STEM-related vacancies. To prepare students for future career, they need skilled high school teachers, who provide a solid academic foundation.

The shortage of STEM teachers is so critical that the Obama administration has announced plans to establish external links among STEM teachers at the national level. Initially, the program will include 50 experienced STEM educators in 50 different places. Within four years, the program will continue to develop until 10,000 of the country's most talented STEM teachers are included. In exchange for pledging to support community STEM education, teachers who join the Teachers'Team will receive additional resources to motivate students and guide other teachers.


According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the number of American students speaking different languages at home increased from 4.7 million in 1980 to 11.2 million in 2009. Almost a quarter(2.7 million) of these children now have trouble speaking English. The diversity of the American population is so great for teachers that they can meet the needs of less skilled students.

Educators who have been trained in TESOL (English for Other Languages) in high school can teach bilingual courses or teach English to students of different languages. In many cases, teachers must use pictures and non-verbal symbols to convey language concepts to students. In addition to helping English Learners (ELL) students, TESOL-trained teachers can help students become familiar with American culture and help them become proficient in standardized tests.

Special Education

High school teaching in special education involves students with learning, emotional, psychological and physical disabilities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the employment rate of special education teachers is expected to increase by 17% between 2010 and 2020. According to a report published in Education Weekly in 2008, nearly 2 million disabled high school students in the United States have received federal-funded special education programs through external links to special education. These plans must address unique challenges related to adolescents with disabilities, including high school graduation, transition to continuing education or employment, and disciplinary referrals.

As high school graduation standards become more stringent, more high school special education teachers are needed to develop academic strategies to help disabled students graduate. For students with severe disabilities, special education teachers provide support for independent living and basic literacy. In addition to working directly with students with disabilities, many school districts need special education specialists to guide and mentor other teachers who have students with disabilities in their mainstream classrooms.

The University of Southern California Rossell offers an online master's degree program to help teachers prepare for all of the high school teaching tasks listed above. For aspiring STEM instructors, the Master of Arts in Teaching and the Master of Advanced Teaching include middle school math and science. Future TESOL teachers can receive comprehensive training through the TESOL Master of Teaching program. For future special education teachers, both the Master of Arts in Teaching and the Master of Education offer a certificate of moderate/moderate disability education.
